Description

Experimental Details A total of 30 mL acetonitrile, DMAP (0.1 g, 0.5 mmol), EDC.HCl (1.3 g, 6.5 mmol), lignoceric acid (0.7 g), guaethol (2.0 g) were heated and stirred under reflux, starting at 92 0C and finishing at 100 0C, for 2 hours. Then overnight at room temperature, and for a further 40 mins at 92 0C to 100 0C. After approximately 14 hrs of stirring, there was 10% conversion to the ester. Samples of the reaction mixture were removed and analysed by TLC at 20 min intervals using a 5:1 hexane:ethyl acetate eluent. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature. To isolate the product, and aqueous/organic work-up was carried out, using hexane solvent (20 mL, 13.1 g, 150 mmol) and then washed twice with HCl (20 mL, 1M, 20 mmol, 0.73 g), twice with 10 wt% sodium bicarbonate (20 mL, 2 g, 20 mmol), once with water (20 mL, 20 g, 1111.1 mmol), and twice with brine (c. NaCl (aq)) ( 20 mL). The organic layer was dried using Magnesium Sulfate. This was filtered out with gravity filtration. The solvent was removed using rotary evaporation. The isolated product was liquid straight after rotary evaporation. It began to turn solid upon cooling. The product had a slight yellow tinge.
