Description

Copper catalysis enabled the oxidative coupling of aldehydes and sulfinates to form a-sulfonylated adducts. The use of MnO2 with an acidic co-solvent allowed access to a broad range of sulfonylated quaternary aldehydes. Derivatisation of the aldehyde allowed access complex derivatives. The mechanism is proposed to be a dual ionic/radical pathway.
